The Diaper Project of Wayne County

The Diaper Project of Wayne County is a non-profit organization managed through the Wayne Township Trustees Office. It is dedicated to eliminating the diaper need in greater Wayne County Indiana and leads a grassroots movement to collect, store, and distribute free diapers to struggling families. We also purchase diapers and wipes directly with donated funds.

What is the Diaper Need?

  • Diaper need is the lack of a sufficient supply of diapers to keep a baby clean, dry and healthy.
  • Infants require up to 12 diapers per day, at a cost of $70 to $80 per month per baby.
  • On average, families in diaper need work 38 hours per week, with 58% holding full time jobs, and 9% working part time.
  • Roughly three-in four (74%) families in diaper need feel embarrassed that they cannot afford enough diapers.
  • Families with diaper need spend 11% of their monthly income on diapers, the fourth-highest expenditure after mortgage/rent.

What is the Local Need?

  • 1 in 3 Wayne County children live in homes at or below the poverty level.
  • 5.2 million infants and toddlers live in poor and low-income families.
  • Government programs—including food stamps & WIC—do not provide funding for diapers.

What is the Impact of a Diaper Need?

  • Diaper need impacts the physical, mental and economic well-being of children and families.
  • The poorest 20 percent of Americans with infants and toddlers spent nearly 14 percent of their after-tax income on diapers in 2014.
  • Most childcare centers require parents to provide a day’s supply of disposable diapers (four to six changes during the day). Without diapers babies cannot participate in early childhood education. Without childcare, many parents cannot go to work or school.
  • Of those with diaper need:
  • 40% keep a child diaperless.
  • 39% borrow diapers from family/friends.
  • 39% Stretch diaper use by keeping a child in a diaper longer.
  • 25% Stretch diaper use by cleaning and reusing soiled diapers.

What is a Diaper Bank?

  • Diaper banks and diaper pantries are nonprofit organizations that focus on addressing diaper need by collecting, storing, and distributing free diapers to struggling families.
  • Diaper banks and diaper pantries obtain diapers through local diaper drives, in-kind donations, and by purchasing diapers directly with donated funds.

Is The Diaper Project of Wayne County associated with the National Diaper Bank?

Yes. The National Diaper Bank Network (NDNB) is comprised of more than 200 community-based diaper banks, including The Diaper Project of Wayne County, working to help babies and their families in 49 states and the District of Columbia.
